Union Rescue Mission (URM) is dedicated to serving men, women and children experiencing homelessness. They provide comprehensive emergency and long-term services to their guests to help them escape the dangerous streets of skid row. URM is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was established in 1891. Today, they are one of the largest rescue missions of our kind in the United States, and the oldest in Los Angeles. Since 1996, the Union Rescue Mission has partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District to develop an onsite adult learning center at its downtown shelter. Each year the Learning Center provides education and vocational training for over 200 homeless men and women living at the shelter. The Learning Center helps guests gain critical vocational skills, math and English skills to help prepare men and women to find work and become contributing members of society.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier together revitalized the Learning Center at the Union Rescue Mission. This remodel created a functional, comfortable and inviting space, providing inspiration to the homeless men and women who utilize the Learning Center. Each year the Learning Center serves hundreds of men and women offering over 400 hours of intensive class time per person. With completion of the project, the Learning Center has been renamed "The Andre and Maggie Ethier Learning Center."
On December 4, 2014, the Ethier's and LADF officially cut the ribbon on the new Maggie and Andre Ethier Learning Center URM in downtown Los Angeles. Significant resources were provided by the Dodgers' stadium operations and IT departments, along with several vendors, have helped make this project a dream come true. Thanks belong to Habitat for Humanity, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Ecovations, Kimberlina Whettam & Associates, O'Bryant Electric Inc, MS Rouse Company, Inc, Morrow Meadows Corporation, Nahib Youssef - Structural Engineers, Design Materials and Encore Commercial Flooring, Sherwin-Williams, Interior Services and WB Signs. Additionally, midway through the project, Dodger employees assisted in painting the Learning Center.
Since 2013, Ethier and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation have supported the Union Rescue Mission (URM) assisting with scholarships and educational resources. Ethier has been active in the LA community since joining the club in 2006, having dedicated most of his time toward raising awareness of hunger and homelessness in LA since 2007. Ethier makes annual visits to URM and has hosted Carne Asada Sunday events at Dodger Stadium with proceeds benefitting LADF and URM.
