Sam Fernandez begins his 31th season with the Dodgers and 14th as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. He was appointed to his current position in 2000. Fernandez joined the organization and was named General Counsel on June 1, 1984. He was assigned the additional responsibilities of Assistant Secretary in 1987 and Secretary in 1998. Before joining the organization, Fernandez was an associate with the law firm of Latham & Watkins from 1980-84 and served as the Dodgersí resident counsel from Feb. 1, 1983 until he formally joined the team.
During his tenure with the Dodgers, Fernandez has been responsible for overseeing all of the teamís legal affairs. His duties have included negotiating and drafting contracts with the teamís broadcasting partners, concessionaires, sponsors and players, licensing the teamís marks and other intellectual property, leasing the stadium for concerts and films and supervising all litigation. In addition to those duties, Fernandez has also overseen the Human Resources department since 2010.
Fernandez has worked on matters ranging from the establishment of the Dodgers' training facility in the Dominican Republic to serving on the Board of Directors of Major League Baseball Properties, Inc. He has also served on the Boards of Directors of Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc., Major League Baseball Enterprises, Inc., The Pediatrics and Family Medical Foundation in Los Angeles, the Southern California Chapter of the American Corporate Counsel Association and the Leadership Advisory Board for the Association of Media & Entertainment Counsel.
In 2009, Fernandez was given the Sports Counsel of the Year Award for outstanding service to a sports league or team by the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel (AMEC). Founded in 2005, the Media and Entertainment Counsel of the Year Awards are the only awards designed to honor attorneys who are part of the leadership at the major global media and entertainment companies. In 2002, Fernandez was named Alumnus of the Year by the Los Angeles Chapter of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Fernandez graduated magna cum laude from UCLA in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and political science. He received his Juris Doctor in 1980 from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1980 and is an active member of the California State Bar, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Fernandez and his wife, Susan, reside in Manhattan Beach, CA. They have two children, Kristina and Mike.
