Dodgers round-by-round picks

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers, who drafted the son of Manager Jim Tracy Tuesday in the 21st round, selected the son of bench coach Jim Riggleman Wednesday.

Jonathan Riggleman, a 19-year-old third baseman from Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, was taken in the 37th round.

"We think he's a good draft-and-follow," said new scouting director Logan White. "He has raw power, soft hands and he worked hard to make himself a good player. Sometimes it's hard being the son of a former Major League manager. But he has ability. This is not a courtesy pick."

White concluded his first Dodger draft by sticking to his stated goal of focusing on high school players, particularly pitchers. And tall ones. Only when he took position players with the last three selections did White go more than two picks without taking a pitcher.

Of the 52 players the Dodgers selected, 29 (56 percent) were in high school, 27 (52 percent) were pitchers. Of those pitchers, 20 (74 percent) were 6-3 or taller. Eleven Dodger picks are from California, seven are Canadians. Three of the Canadians were drafted out of Eastern Oklahoma State Junior College.

The top pick, James Loney, is expected to sign after this weekend, when his Elkins High School team competes in the Texas state championship. The left-handed hitting first baseman will bypass a scholarship to Baylor and give up pitching.

"We accomplished everything I hoped for," said White. "We got a special hitter, three quality high school pitchers early (Greg Miller, Zachary Hammes and Jonathan Broxton) and an athlete catcher (Michael Nixon), all guys who could become All-Stars down the road. We took a lot of pitching in picks 6-10 to stock our system with arms. With Dave Wallace and all the great instructors we have to work with our young pitchers, I had no problem going after big, tall pitchers that just need fine-tuning."
