VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Barring an unexpected late settlement, the Dodgers are headed for an arbitration hearing with 2003 Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne on Wednesday.

Gagne is seeking a salary of $8 million after receiving $550,000 last year when the Dodgers unilaterally renewed him. The club had that right because he lacked enough service time for arbitration eligibility. The leverage changes significantly this year because Gagne has the three years service needed for arbitration. The Dodgers have submitted a salary figure of $5 million.

A three-member arbitration panel will hear arguments from both sides in Phoenix and pick one figure or the other by Thursday. Gagne told the club he will attend the hearing and will attempt to reach Vero Beach in time for Thursday's first workout for pitchers and catchers.
