| SAN DIEGO -- General manager Paul DePodesta majored in economics, not munitions, but he doesn't cringe when told he's just taken a first-place team and blown it up.
"Partly," DePodesta said Saturday, after continuing his remaking of the Dodgers roster. "I told people if we were in second or third this would have been easy to do. If we stood pat and been caught, it would have been my fault for not doing anything. If we make these moves and we don't win, it will be perceived as my fault for doing something."
He acquired outfielder Steve Finley and journeyman catcher Brent Mayne from the Arizona Diamondbacks and unloaded outfielder Dave Roberts to the Boston Red Sox and left-handed reliever Tom Martin to the Atlanta Braves for minor leaguers before the 1 p.m. trade deadline.
DePodesta did not land the two Johnsons he sought, Arizona starter Randy and Colorado catcher Charles, the latter refusing to waive a no-trade clause.
To get Finley, DePodesta traded three minor leaguers -- outfielder Reggie Abercrombie, catcher Koyie Hill and pitcher Bill Murphy, acquired Friday from Florida with Brad Penny and Hee-Seop Choi in the deal that made Marlins out of All-Star Paul Lo Duca, reliever Guillermo Mota and outfielder Juan Encarnacion.
