| LOS ANGELES -- Strapped for relief pitchers, the Dodgers Thursday acquired right-hander Elmer Dessens and cash from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league outfielder Jeremy Milons.
Dessens, 33, is 1-6 with a 4.75 ERA this year, but after being demoted out of the starting rotation he has compiled a 2.03 ERA with two saves in 29 games out of the bullpen. Dessens earns $4 million this year and has a 2005 option for $4.5 million or a $300,000 buyout.
"Elmer is a proven Major League pitcher who has excelled this season out of the bullpen and we feel fortunate to be able to add an arm into our mix," said general manager Paul DePodesta. "We expect him to be a valuable addition to our relief corps down the stretch."
Dessens moves into the bullpen spot previously occupied by Darren Dreifort, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn anterior cruciate ligament that will require surgery.
Dreifort had inherited the setup job when Guillermo Mota was traded July 30 to the Florida Marlins.
The deal is the second one in less than three weeks with the division-rival Diamondbacks, who are shedding payroll. The Dodgers already had acquired veterans Steve Finley and Brent Mayne from Arizona for minor leaguers.
