DENVER -- J.D. Drew should learn Tuesday whether he needs season-ending surgery to repair his broken wrist, but the Dodgers couldn't wait even that long to move on without him.

While general manager Paul DePodesta remained in California working on possible solutions, manager Jim Tracy had to put together a lineup for Monday night's game at Coors Field that did not have Drew, outfielder Milton Bradley, third baseman Jose Valentin and All-Star shortstop Cesar Izturis.

Tracy moved cleanup hitter Jeff Kent to third in the order to possibly get the slugger an extra at-bat. Olmedo Saenz batted fourth, Jayson Werth was fifth, Jason Phillips was sixth, Jason Grabowski batted seventh and Jason Repko hit eighth. Oscar Robles subbed for Izturis leading off at shortstop.

The all-Ja(y)son outfield had Repko in center field, because he's the fastest, although Werth has about as much experience at the position.

"You want to build a lineup to put people in positions where you feel you have an opportunity to score runs in this park, but you have to defend in this park," said Tracy. "There's a lot of real estate to cover."

As for Drew, who took a Brad Halsey fastball on his left wrist and broke the ulnar styloid bone, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo tests on Tuesday. Dr. Norman Zemel will determine if surgery is necessary.

"Depending on the fracture and the alignment, there's a possibility it will heal itself, or more would have to be done," said Tracy. "If they have to repair and let it heal, he wouldn't be able to make it back [before the season ends]. We'll see what the doctor says before we jump to conclusions like that."

Drew represents the 16th disabling injury of the first half for the Dodgers. To replace him on the roster, Los Angeles purchased the contract of Taiwanese outfielder Chin-Feng Chen, the all-time Triple-A Las Vegas home run leader. Chen was hitting .288 with 10 home runs and a team-high 47 RBIs for Las Vegas.

Chen once was a prized international prospect. But he lacked a defensive position and struck out too often, so he was passed by Repko from within and Werth from outside the organization. Chen missed two weeks last month with a bruised right wrist suffered, like Drew, when struck by a pitch.

"He'll get some at-bats," Tracy said of Chen, who is 0-for-14 with six strikeouts in five previous callups and might be getting his final chance as a Dodger. "He gets an opportunity to see where he's at, and we get an opportunity to see where he's at."

Chen figures to play Tuesday and Thursday against Colorado left-handed starters Jeff Francis and Joe Kennedy.

To make room for Chen on the 40-man roster, catcher Paul Bako was moved to the 60-day emergency DL. Bako is recovering from knee reconstruction.

Injury update: Izturis missed his fourth game on Monday with a lingering hamstring injury that seems destined to land him on the DL, which would take advantage of the three-day All-Star break. Izturis said there was no improvement.

Bradley tested his torn finger ligament in Los Angeles with 25 dry swings and reported no setbacks.

Disabled outfielder Ricky Ledee ran straight ahead at 100 percent and will test his hamstring on the bases on Tuesday.

Disabled pitcher Wilson Alvarez will pitch in a Triple-A rehab assignment on Tuesday.

More woe for Kuo: Star-crossed Taiwanese pitcher Hong-Chi Kuo, finally appearing to be healthy after two Tommy John surgeries, heard a pop in his arm on Sunday and left Double-A Jacksonville's game. Kuo was promoted two weeks earlier after dominating at Class A Vero Beach.

More Minor League news: Five players from Jacksonville have been selected to the South Division team for the Southern League All-Star Game, slated for July 13 in Mobile, Ala. They are left-handed relief pitcher Luis Gonzalez, catcher Russell Martin, infielders Joel Guzman and Delwyn Young, and outfielder Todd Donovan.

Coming up: Odalis Perez makes his first start since May 14 on Tuesday night against the Rockies and the club couldn't have picked a more intimidating location for his return. Perez will take the mound at Coors Field, where he allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in five innings of an April 23 loss. In his last three starts in Denver, his ERA is 8.10. Francis will oppose.
