TWINS 8, PIRATES 2
at Bradenton, Fla.
Saturday, April 1

Pirates at the plate: Ryan Doumit put Pittsburgh on the board in the third with his fifth homer of the spring, a solo shot to right field. Jeromy Burnitz also went deep, hitting a solo homer to right-center in the fifth.

Twins at the plate: Luis Castillo and Justin Morneau each drove in a run in Minnesota's two-run first inning. Morneau also knocked out an RBI single in the fifth, but Michael Cuddyer's three-run homer to left-center that inning widened the gap for good. Cuddyer, who appears to be successfully recovering from an oblique strain, later hit a double off the left-field wall. Joe Mauer had a good day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI.

Pirates on the mound: Ian Snell (0-3) gave up two runs in the first inning, but a rough four-run fifth signaled his exit. The right-hander ended up allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in five innings.

Twins on the mound: The Pirates' damage against Minnesota starter Kyle Lohse was limited to two solo homers, which were the only two hits the righty allowed in five innings. Jesse Crain pitched a scoreless eighth and Joe Nathan retired the side in the ninth.

Grapefruit League records: Twins 19-13; Pirates 15-17-1.

Up next: The Twins will face the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings at Hammond Stadium on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game. Scott Baker will take the hill for Minnesota in the 12:05 p.m. CT start.

The Pirates' next game will be their season opener against the Brewers on Monday. Oliver Perez will get the start against Milwaukee's Doug Davis in the 1:05 p.m. CT contest at Miller Park.
