Green, Gomes pick up RBIs in final Grapefruit League contest

Rays at the plate: Tampa Bay scored all of its runs in the eighth inning. Nick Green came in at second base for Jorge Cantu and promptly gave the Rays their first run, scoring Joey Gathright on a single down the third-base line. Carl Crawford scored on a Ramon Santiago error the next play, and a sacrifice fly from Jonny Gomes plated Green to complete the rally.
Tigers at the plate: Dmitri Young came up big for Detroit with two RBIs in four at-bats. He singled in Curtis Granderson in the first with a grounder through the right side, and homered off reliever Brian Meadows in the sixth. Placido Polanco also had two hits.
Rays on the mound: Casey Fossum took the loss, allowing one run on three hits over three innings. He struck out three, walked two and hit a batter. The wheels came off for Tampa Bay in the sixth, as Meadows allowed three runs on three hits and a walk. Rays pitchers struck out 10 total batters.
Tigers on the mound: Mike Maroth held the Rays scoreless on five hits over five innings, and did not allow consecutive hits. Tigers lefty Jamie Walker lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits in the eighth.
Grapefruit League records: Tigers 18-15-1; Rays 13-16-1.
Coming up: Detroit will hold a noon workout in Kansas City on Sunday before opening the season against the Royals on Monday. Left-hander Kenny Rogers will get the ball for Detroit in the 4:10 p.m. ET matchup. The Tigers will oppose Royals righty Scott Elarton. Rogers, who will be making his Tigers debut, was 3-0 with a 3.46 ERA against Kansas City in 2005.
Tampa Bay travels to Baltimore on Monday for a 3:05 p.m. ET Opening Day game with the Orioles. Scott Kazmir is scheduled to start for the Rays. The left-hander posted a 1-2 record with a 9.24 ERA in five starts this spring, and is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA in his career against the Orioles. Baltimore will send right-hander Rodrigo Lopez to the mound.
