Dodgers feeling fine as they hit the road
Los Angeles (12-13) at Florida (15-10), Tuesday, 4:10 p.m. PT
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers embark on a six-day, six-game road trip to Florida and Colorado feeling much better about themselves. They completed a three-game sweep over the Colorado Rockies with a 3-2 victory in 10 innings Sunday, recorded their first three-game winning streak of the season, and moved to within one game of the .500 mark.
"I think, overall, we're starting to relax and play with more confidence," said first baseman James Loney, who delivered the game-winning RBI single Sunday. "We're starting to stay within ourselves and put together strings of good at-bats." The Dodgers swept the Rockies without the help of center fielder Andruw Jones, who begins the Florida series mired in a 3-for-27 slump that has driven his batting average down to .159. But the Dodgers picked up contributions from one end of the roster to another and hope to play better against the Marlins than they did in 2007, when they split a four-game series in Florida. The Dodgers also lost two out of three at Dodger Stadium before the All-Star break last year. "They played us tough and gave us some trouble," catcher Russell Martin said. "Hopefully we can turn that around this time." Shortstop Rafael Furcal continues to make major contributions. He recorded his 12th multiple-hit game of the year Sunday afternoon, going 2-for-4 and drawing a leadoff walk in the 10th and scoring the game-winning run. He has reached base with a hit or a walk in all 25 games this season for the Dodgers [12-13]. Only Philadelphia's Chase Utley [14] has more multiple-hit games in the National League. Third baseman Blake DeWitt went 2-for-8 since his recall from Triple-A Las Vegas, including his first Major League triple Sunday afternoon. Another rookie, reliever Cory Wade, pitched two scoreless innings Sunday and allowed one hit. He has allowed only one run in four innings since he was recalled. Pitching matchupLAD: RHP Derek Lowe (2-1, 2.45 ERA)
Lowe is 5-4 lifetime against the Marlins with a 4.13 ERA [26 earned runs in 56 2/3 innings]. He was 0-2 versus the Marlins last year, including one game he should have won. Lowe pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed three runs and five hits, but lost when Josh Willingham hit a game-winning home run in the ninth inning. FLA: LHP Andrew Miller (1-2, 7.94 ERA)
The Dodgers get their first look at the promising left-hander acquired from Detroit as part of the payment for third baseman Miguel Cabrera. Miller has yet to win at Dolphin Stadium. He beat Atlanta, 7-2, in his previous start. Tidbits
Manager Joe Torre said he would like to get Mark Sweeney at-bats in the Florida series. The Marlins will give him the perfect opportunity. The Dodgers face left-handers Miller and Scott Olsen in succession on Tuesday and Wednesday. "It's all about giving him some more at-bats so he can come off the bench and feel comfortable," Torre said. "Hopefully we'll get him in a game on this road trip and probably in Florida. It's a very difficult role. That's why it's tough for a young player to do it. A pinch-hitter has to be a guy who is ready to swing the bat at the first pitch." ... Matt Kemp's five RBIs in an inning tied a Dodger record shared by Jeff Kent and Dusty Baker. Kent did it May 6, 2005 at Cincinnati and Baker did it on September 13, 1977. ... Who is the Dodgers emergency catcher? Delwyn Young, Torre said Sunday. ... Nomar Garciaparra [left calf] will not accompany the team on the next road but infielder Tony Abreu will and continue working out before the team decides he is ready for a Minor League rehab assignment. ... Brad Penny finished April with a 4-2 record and a 2.89 ERA in six start. ... The Dodgers will not need a fifth starter until next Saturday in Colorado, but then not again for another two weeks, Torre said before the game. ... Executives Tommy Lasorda, Ned Colletti and Jose Vizcaino departed Sunday to visit the team's player development complex in Guerra, Camp Las Palmas. Tickets
