Bennett works to improve throwing
Searching for touch, backstop comes out before Reds opener
LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers catcher Gary Bennett was out for early work Monday afternoon, performing throwing drills to various bases in an effort to regain the throwing touch that eluded him this weekend.
Bennett, the veteran backup catcher, overthrew first base onn two plays during the weekend. Manager Joe Torre suggested the throws were a byproduct of rust, because Bennett had been limited to only 10 games this season.
Bennett expressed frustration with his throwing and said that he was trying to work through it. He ran through drills at various speeds in an effort to regulate his throwing mechanics.
"It's frustrating regardless," Bennett said. "I throw hard, I throw soft. I just try to work through it. Throwing is throwing."
