Martin will be back behind the plate on Saturday against the Mets, sporting the Dodgers' highest batting average (.326) and on-base percentage (.430), with the most runs scored (27) and twice as many walks (34) as the next closest teammate.
"I've been seeing the ball pretty good, since I went 1-for-30," said Martin, exaggerating only slightly after opening the season 3-for-29.
Since then, he's batting .367 (58-for-158).
"I hope this win gets us back where we need to be," he said after Friday's victory stopped the Dodgers' four-game losing streak.
Martin hit fifth in the order on Friday, his fifth different spot this year. Manager Joe Torre's lineup had Martin protecting new cleanup hitter James Loney, with Jeff Kent moved up to third. They were three of six Dodgers to drive in runs.
Pitching matchupLAD: RHP Chad Billingsley (4-6, 3.68 ERA)
Last time out, Billingsley allowed his first home run in a month but continued to pitch like an ace against the Cubs. Working with an extra day of rest, he went six innings and struck out seven but was lifted for a pinch-hitter with the Dodgers trailing by a run after making only 83 pitches. He has quality starts in five of his past six appearances. NYM: RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-6, 5.33 ERA)
The 6-foot-7 hurler has fallen into a steep slump of late, as he lost his sixth consecutive decision on Monday by giving up four earned runs in four innings to the Marlins. Despite the shortness of the outing, Pelfrey threw 95 pitches, 52 for strikes. His ERA has suffered in the process, rising from 1.50 on April 15 to his current mark. Tidbits
Juan Pierre's pregame routine was pleasantly interrupted when he had a chance to meet his boyhood idol, former Met and Dodger Darryl Strawberry. Pierre had Strawberry autograph a baseball and said that it was one of the more memorable moments of his career. "I tried to swing like him playing Wiffle ball in the backyard," said Pierre. "Every team he played for became my favorite team. You probably haven't seen me smile like this all year." ... Closer Takashi Saito, who blew a save in Chicago in his last outing, allowed a walk to Carlos Beltran and hit Ramon Castro with a pitch but completed a scoreless ninth inning. ... Rookie pitcher Clayton Kershaw has signed an exclusive marketing agreement with Steiner Sports. Tickets
