Romo psyched for Giants' trip to SoCal
San Francisco (43-61) at Los Angeles (52-52), Mon., 7:10 PT
SAN FRANCISCO -- It's been just over a month since Sergio Romo was called up from Double-A Connecticut. With 11 Major League appearances under his belt, he's learned some of the ins and outs of being a big leaguer.
But there's still at least one veteran move Romo doesn't know -- the turning down of the random ticket requester. The Giants start a three-game set against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Monday. Romo, a Brawley, Calif., native, is expecting several calls for tickets; he's not planning to say no to anyone. "I still think it's actually pretty cool," Romo said. "It's just the people I grew up with; they knew me as a kid. Those people have my number for a reason. If they call me, I'm not going to turn away." Now that he's a member of the Giants, Romo dislikes the Dodgers as much as any Bay Area baseball fan. Growing up in Southern California, though, the righty said the first big league game he attended was with his family in the left-field seats at Chavez Ravine. Romo's parents will be in attendance for this series, too, only they'll be sitting without their son. He'll be roaming around the clubhouse, dugout and bullpen. "I'm pretty excited," Romo said. "I remember being there as a kid, seeing everything from the outside. It'll be cool to be there and see the inside of that place." There's a good chance he'll see the field in an important situation. With a 2.38 ERA in 12 innings, Romo has performed consistently since joining the Giants on June 24. If San Francisco hopes to stay in contention in the National League West, a sweep of the rival Dodgers would be a good start. With his family watching, Romo admits there's added incentive to pitch well. But he insists he won't feel pressured. "It's kind of hard to explain," Romo said. "You want to do well in front of them, but at the same time, you know you can't think about it when you're out there. I've got a job to do, and I have to do what's best for the club. Pitching matchupSF: RHP Kevin Correia (1-5, 5.71 ERA)
Correia emerged with a no-decision from his last outing against Washington, although he blanked the Nationals for four innings. He yielded an unearned run in the fifth before crumbling in the sixth, when he allowed three runs. The one big inning has been Correia's undoing for much of the season. Still, he called this game one of his best of the year, particularly since it followed a 3 2/3-innings, seven-run effort at Chicago. LAD: RHP Hiroki Kuroda (5-7, 3.98 ERA)
Kuroda had another wobbly beginning, following up his two-inning start in Arizona by allowing five runs over the first three innings at Coors Field. As bad as it sounds, he was victimized by some flukey hits and he stopped the damage there, finishing up with three scoreless innings. This start against the Giants should indicate which is the real Kuroda. Tidbits
Reliever Keiichi Yabu said his sprained right middle finger is feeling "good." He's been on the 15-day disabled list since July 20, and he currently is throwing bullpen sessions every other day. ... As previously scheduled, Noah Lowry will travel to the Giants' Minor League complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., when the team is in Los Angeles and San Diego this week. Manager Bruce Bochy said Lowry is "pain free," but "it's still a question" whether he'll pitch again this season. ... After reliever Tyler Walker gave up the lead in the eighth inning Saturday, Bochy said he'd talk with his coaches about shuffling his relievers' roles. Before Sunday's game, Bochy reiterated that "we'll probably have to tweak the bullpen," but said no changes had been made at that time. ... Heading into Sunday's game, Bengie Molina had 49 RBIs that came without benefit of a home run. That's third in the Majors behind Josh Hamilton (57) and David Wright (50), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Tickets
