Royals on the mound: Opening Day starter Gil Meche held the Dodgers scoreless for seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out six with one walk. He retired the Dodgers in the seventh inning on three pitches.

Dodgers on the mound: Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda was charged with four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Erick Threets improved his chances of getting the second left-handed relief job by retiring both left-handed hitters he faced. Jeff Weaver pitched one inning, with all three outs by strikeout.
