Dodgers know value of late Draft picks
Nearly half of active roster was selected after No. 111
LOS ANGELES -- Take a good look at the Dodgers' roster and you'll see that the First-Year Player Draft is hardly over for them.
Nearly half of the current active roster was taken after overall pick No. 111.
After 111 picks on Day 1 -- including Round 1, Compensation Round A, Round 2, Round 3 and Compensation Round B -- and Rounds 4-30 on Day 2, the Draft will resume with exclusive coverage on MLB.com with Round 31 at 8:30 a.m. PT on Thursday.
MLB.com's coverage will include a live pick-by-pick audio stream, expert commentary and the exclusive Draft Tracker, a searchable database of every Draft-eligible player, featuring statistics, scouting reports and video highlights.
Fans will not only be able to follow along every minute of the way online, but they'll be able to interact directly with Draft-eligible players and MLB.com Draft experts, among others.
The Draft Tracker will also feature the addition of Twitter, and the participation of "tweeters" such as MLB.com Draft expert @JonathanMayoB3, who will also be serving as on-air talent for all three days of the Draft; and reporter @LisaWinstonMLB, who will be writing the up-to-the-minute coverage for MLB.com.
In addition, MLB.com has created a Twitter account devoted to the Draft, where you can stay updated on every piece of info as it becomes available (@MLBDraft).
The list of Dodgers taken in later rounds includes home-grown All-Star Russell Martin (17th round, No. 511 overall), Matt Kemp (sixth round, No. 181 overall), Brent Leach (sixth round, No. 196 overall) and Cory Wade (10th round, No. 298 overall).
Martin reached the Major Leagues less than four years after being drafted; Kemp three years after being drafted; Leach and Wade less than four years after being drafted.
Even more impressive are current players drafted by other clubs. Brad Ausmus was taken in the 48th round (No. 1,151 overall) by the Yankees in 1987; Orlando Hudson was taken in the 43rd round (No. 1,280 overall) by Toronto in 1997; Juan Pierre was taken in the 13th round (No. 390 overall) by Colorado; Mark Loretta was taken in the seventh round (No. 207 overall) by Milwaukee in 1992 and Casey Blake was taken in the seventh round (No. 189 overall) by Toronto in 1996.
