LOS ANGELES - The Dodgers added four more honors to their illustrious history this year when Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp won Silver Slugger Awards and Orlando Hudson and Kemp took home Gold Gloves. The franchise has a long history of award winners as the, claiming multiple Most Valuable Players, Cy Young Award winners, Rookies of the Year, Glove Glovers and Silver Sluggers.
The Dodgers have had 10 MVPs but haven't seen one of their players win the award since Kirk Gibson in 1988, which was also the last time the franchise won the World Series. In fact, the Dodgers have had three instances in which they won the World Series and had the MVP in the same year -- Roy Campanella in 1955, Sandy Koufax in '63 and Gibson in '88. And they've also had four instances in which they won the World Series and had the Cy Young Award winner, with Koufax doing it in '63 and '65, Fernando Valenzuela in '81 and Orel Hershiser in '88. The Dodgers have had seven pitchers combine to win nine Cy Young Awards, as Koufax won it three times. Eric Gagne was the last to win the honor, claiming it in 2003. Gagne also won the franchise's only two Reliever of the Year Awards. But the honor that the Dodgers have dominated the most is the Rookie of the Year Award, as the franchise has 16 winners, which is twice as many as the second-place Yankees. They had a record-nine winners in an 18-year span, including five in a row from 1992-96, with Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Hideo Nomo and Todd Hollandsworth winning in consecutive seasons. The Dodgers also have had 21 players combine to win 38 Gold Glove Awards, with Gil Hodges, John Roseboro, Maury Wills, Wes Parker, Willie Davis, Steve Garvey, Andy Messersmith, Mondesi and Greg Maddux winning the award multiple times while with the Dodgers. The franchise has also had its fair share of Silver Sluggers, with 15 players combining to take home the honor 21 times, as Dusty Baker, Valenzuela and Piazza won the award multiple times while with the team. The Dodgers have also had 10 Comeback Players of the Year, with Nomar Garciaparra last winning in 2006. And for the off-the-field efforts, Garvey is the lone Dodgers player to win the Roberto Clemente Award for community service in 1981. And the Dodgers have also had several players honored in both the All-Star Game and in the postseason. Five Dodgers have been named Midsummer Classic MVP, including Garvey, who won it twice, and Piazza, who was the last to win it back in 1996. Four players have been named MVP of the National League Championship Series, with Hershiser winning the award in 1988. He also won the MVP of the World Series that season. Seven Dodgers have won that award, including Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager, who were all named tri-MVPs of the 1981 World Series. Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda is the only Dodgers skipper to win Manager of the Year Award, winning in 1983 and '88. Joe Torre finished third last season.
