Dodgers won't offer arbitration to seven
By declining, LA cannot receive Draft picks as compensation
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers, wanting no part of an unexpected expensive salary, will not offer arbitration to any of their seven ranking free agents by Tuesday night's deadline, meaning the club will not be entitled to Draft pick compensation if any of the players sign elsewhere.
Randy Wolf and Orlando Hudson are Type A free agents. Type B free agents are Ronnie Belliard, Jon Garland, Guillermo Mota, Will Ohman and Vicente Padilla. Rankings are based on a two-year statistical formula for each position group. A Type A player ranks in the top 20 percent at his position; a Type B player ranks in the top 40 percent but not in the top 20 percent.
The Dodgers earlier cut loose Ohman, buying him out of a 2010 option for $200,000. He is coming off shoulder surgery. They also have eight non-ranking free agents for which arbitration does not apply -- Brad Ausmus, Jason Schmidt, Jeff Weaver, Juan Castro, Eric Milton, Mark Loretta, Doug Mientkiewicz and Jim Thome.
In the cases of Wolf and Hudson, the Dodgers would have been in line to receive a first-round Draft pick from the signing team if that club selects in the second half of the first round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft or a second-round pick from the signing team if that club selects in the first half of the first round, plus a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds in either case.
The key factor that clubs face in offering arbitration isn't the compensation they receive if the player leaves, but the risk involved if the player accepts. Wolf and Hudson would be in line for significant raises from their $8 million salary.
Tuesday night's deadline typically signals the effectual start of the free-agent season, as most clubs are reluctant to sign another team's free agent without knowing whether it would be required to forfeit Draft picks as compensation.
