Padres Press Release
Padres reveal plans to honor Jerry Coleman in 2014 and beyond
Tributes include jersey patch, the return of Coleman's signature call and the Jerry Coleman Broadcast Center
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today revealed, during the Opening Night pregame ceremony, a number of ways the club plans to honor Jerry Coleman in 2014 and beyond. The Hall of Fame broadcaster passed away in January at the age of 89.
"Padres baseball will never be the same without Jerry," said Padres President & CEO Mike Dee. "It feels foreign to begin a season without his physical presence at the ballpark, but he is always in our hearts and on our minds. No tribute will ever be enough to honor his extraordinary contributions to this country, this city and this organization."
As was previously announced, all season long, Padres players and coaches will wear a jersey patch featuring Coleman's initials inside of his trademark star.
For years, when the Padres made a great defensive play, all fans in the ballpark would look to the press box to see if Coleman's gold star would be hung from the radio booth. Now, once again, fans will be able to look to the press box following a great play, to see if a star will hang. If it is, fans at Petco Park will also hear the playing of Coleman's signature call: "Oh, Doctor! You can hang a star on that, baby!"
Having spent 42 seasons in the radio booth for the Padres, with the exception of one year when he left to manage the team, Coleman is a monumental figure in the history of the Padres franchise. Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler announced during tonight's pregame ceremony a fitting dedication: from today moving forward, the television and radio booths in the Petco Park press box are located in the Jerry Coleman Broadcast Center at Petco Park.
