Rockies' Helton, Chacon named NL Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month for April
The Colorado Rockies' Todd Helton, who batted .337 with six home runs and 27 RBI, and Shawn Chacon, who was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA, were voted the National League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month for April, respectively.
Helton was 33-for-98 with 11 doubles and 28 runs scored in 27 games. He led the league in RBI and runs scored and compiled a .633 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base percentage. On April 29, he recorded the 1,000th hit of his career, becoming the fourth player in club history to reach that milestone.
Chacon started five games, pitched 34.2 innings and allowed 20 hits and nine walks. He struck out 25 batters and allowed only four earned runs all month. His ERA leads all Major League starters, and he ranks first in the NL in opponents' batting average (.164) and is tied for first in wins.
Finishing a close second was the Cardinals' Jim Edmonds, who hit .389 with a .750 slugging percentage and a .494 on-base percentage. He connected for five home runs and collected 17 RBI for the month. Other players receiving votes were: the Astros' Jeff Bagwell (.314, 10 HR, 19 RBI); Braves' Gary Sheffield (.340, 7 HR, 19 RBI); Cardinals' Albert Pujols (.382, 5 HR, 17 RBI) and Edgar Renteria (.343, 4 HR, 24 RBI); Cubs Corey Patterson (.300, 5 HR, 22 RBI), Diamondbacks' Luis Gonzalez (.336, 7 HR, 17 RBI); Marlins Alex Gonzalez (.337, 6 HR, 22 RBI); and Giants' Barry Bonds (.290, 8 HR, 16 RBI) and J.T. Snow (.337, 21 RBI).
Pitchers receiving votes were the Braves' John Smoltz (10 SV, 0.00 ERA); Cardinals' Woody Williams (4-0, 1.09 ERA); Phillies' Kevin Millwood (4-1, 3.48 ERA, no-hitter on April 27); Cubs' Mark Prior (4-1, 1.70 ERA) and Kerry Wood (4-1, 2.77 ERA); Expos' Javier Vazquez (3-1, 2.50 ERA); Pirates Jeff Suppan (4-1, 1.89 ERA); Giants' Damian Moss (4-0, 2.35 ERA); and Dodgers' Eric Gagne (8 SV, 0.00 ERA).
Helton and Chacon will each receive a specially designed trophy for being named the Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month.
