LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Elmer Dessens from the Kansas City Royals for left-handed pitcher Odalis Perez, minor league right-handers Blake Johnson and Julio Pimentel and cash considerations, according to Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti.

"Elmer is a versatile pitcher who has had success throughout his career out of the bullpen," said Colletti. "We expect him to help bolster our pitching staff."

Dessens, 35, has appeared in 43 games for the Royals this season, posting a 4.50 ERA in 54.0 innings. He has held left-handed hitters to a .238 average (19-for-80). In 320 career outings, including 135 starts, he has a 4.41 ERA including a 3.30 ERA in 2002, the sixth-best mark in the National League.

This will mark Dessens' second tour with the Dodgers, as he appeared in 28 games for Los Angeles last season, including seven starts, and logged a 3.56 ERA in 65.2 innings. In 2004, the Mexico native went 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 games following an August trade to the Dodgers from Arizona.

He led the club with a 3.56 ERA last season among pitchers with at least 20.0 innings pitched. In 185 career relief appearances, Dessens is 10-10 with a 3.92 ERA (116 ER/266.1 IP).

Dessens became the 15th player in Dodger history to hail from Mexico when he made his debut on Aug. 22, 2004, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four batters.

Perez, 29, is 4-4 with a 6.83 ERA this season, his sixth with the Dodgers. In 184 career big league games, including 153 starts, the southpaw is 56-55 with a 4.24 ERA.

Johnson, 21, is 4-5 with a 4.92 ERA for Single-A Vero Beach this season. He was selected in the second round of the June 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Pimentel, 21, also played for Single-A Vero Beach this season and posted a 3-8 record with two saves and a 5.69 ERA in 30 games, including eight starts.
