Schmidt's recovery going slowly

While progressing, LA righty not expected until May or June

PHOENIX -- Jason Schmidt, recovering slowly from last June's serious shoulder surgery, still is not throwing off a mound and is not expected to be pitching until May or June, according to manager Joe Torre.

"He feels a lot better, but it will still be a time," said Torre. "There was excitement with how well he felt early in Spring."

But Schmidt felt so good early in camp he might have been too aggressive. He did not suffer a specific setback, but backed off because of stiffness and a "dead arm."

Schmidt said he's "definitely progressing. The more I throw, the better. I'm taking less time off between throwing."

His long tossing is up to an estimated 120 feet and he occasionally tosses off a mound, but he has not thrown a bullpen session since Feb. 26.
