Torre misses Hurdle's call

Dodgers skipper not interested in joining NL All-Star staff

LOS ANGELES -- Joe Torre said he missed a phone call from Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, presumably about the coaching spot on the National League All-Star team that opened with the dismissal of Willie Randolph by the Mets.

Torre reiterated that he had no desire to coach in the game at Yankee Stadium and was pleased that Hurdle selected Cubs manager Lou Piniella. He said Hurdle left a message for him and he left a message for Hurdle.

"Maybe he felt he had enough questions about it to ask, because somebody wrote that I was skipped twice," Torre said, speculating about Hurdle's call. "He chose Lou. He's known Lou a long time. What's wrong with Lou Piniella? I'm glad he didn't ask me. Let's leave it right there. Lou's certainly worthy."

Torre said his presence at the stadium where he managed for 12 years would be an unnecessary distraction.

"The All-Star Game is special," Torre said. "I don't want to, I shouldn't get any attention during that thing. I didn't think it was something that made any sense."
