NLCS Game 1 tidbits

Lopes eschews reunion of famous Dodgers infield

LOS ANGELES -- Game 2 of the National League Championship Series will be played at 1:07 p.m. PT Friday at Dodger Stadium. Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was surprised and irked by that.

"I thought we have home-field advantage," Ethier said. "We have the home-field advantage but now we have to play a day game at home where we play mostly night games."

• Former Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey, shortstop Bill Russell and third baseman Ron Cey threw out ceremonial first pitches for Game 1 at Dodger Stadium on Thursday evening.

Phillies coach Davey Lopes, who was the second baseman in that celebrated infield that played together in four World Series, declined an invitation to join them in the ceremony. Lopes said he just wasn't comfortable with the idea.

• The possibility of freezing rain threatens Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Friday in New York. Los Angeles? Forecast calls for sunshine and 80 degrees at game time. The forecast for Philadelphia, however, calls for possible rain Sunday and Monday for Games 3 and 4 of the Dodgers-Phillies series.

• Former Phillies Mike Lieberthal and Tadahito Iguchi were in attendance for Game 1.

• Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw set an LCS record with three wild pitches in the fifth inning. That also tied a record for wild pitches in an LCS game, set by Tommy John of the Angels in Game 4 of the 1982 ALCS and again by Juan Guzman of the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the 1993 ALCS.

• Manny Ramirez's home run was his 29th in postseason play, adding on to his own Major League playoff record. He has also played in 45 playoff games, one short of the record held by David Justice.

• Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard and outfielder Jayson Werth have both reached base in 14 straight postseason games. Howard had a two-run double and has reached base in all 11 postseason road games he's played. But he has still never hit a home run on the road in the playoffs.

• Howard's two-run double gave him 18 RBIs in postseason play in his career. That passes Mike Schmidt for most by a Phillies hitter.

• Dodgers infielder Orlando Huson pinch-hit in the fifth inning. It was his first postseason appearance after playing in 1,014 regular-season games.
