Torre being cautious with Ethier's ankle
Right fielder likely to miss weekend series with Marlins

"He hit in the cage before the game and felt better, but he has to go to the outfield, and that's tough," said Torre. "He wasn't available today, my guess is he probably won't be through the weekend."
Ethier missed a second start on Friday night because of the ankle injury, which he sustained in Wednesday night's game in Pittsburgh stepping on the first-base bag while returning on a pickoff attempt by pitcher Ross Ohlendorf. Torre said that pinch-hitting was a possibility.
Ethier continues to receive treatment from team trainers and was put through some agility drills in the outfield before batting practice on Friday. He was given a cold compression unit to take back to his hotel so he could continue therapy overnight.
"He's not comfortable yet," Torre said before the game. "As soon as we feel it's safe. [we'll] put him in there, but the last thing we want to do is send him in there and all of a sudden we lose him. Right now we're not sure. It's something to pay attention to. I'm sure just running out to right field eight or nine times a game would take its toll. The swelling is about the same."
Torre had Reed Johnson replace Ethier in right field, batting second, with James Loney third and Matt Kemp fifth. Playing left field on Thursday, Johnson had three hits (two infield hits).
