Manager Joe Torre also said that he plans to give Ramon Ortiz a spot start Friday night in San Diego, allowing an extra day of rest for his entire rotation with Thursday's day off.
"That's the plan right now and hopefully we won't have to change it," said Torre.
Ely was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday after allowing only one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Brewers to make room on the roster for Jeff Weaver. Ordinarily, an optioned player must remain in the Minor Leagues for a minimum of 10 days, unless he is replacing an injured player at the same position.
But the Dodgers must have had an idea he wouldn't be down long, because Ely said he never even joined Albuquerque. Instead, he reported to Class A Inland Empire, where he threw a bullpen session Saturday. He worked out in Los Angeles on Sunday and flew to Phoenix, but not with the club.
"It's safe to say he'll get the ball every five or six days," Torre said of Ely.
Haeger was diagnosed with the announced injury after failing to retire any of five batters in his start Saturday. Haeger (0-4, 8.49) is out of options and could not be sent to the Minor Leagues without risk of being claimed by another club.
"Stan [Conte, trainer] told me it has been bothering Charlie, but he didn't let on about it until the other day," Torre said. "He was getting it worked on. He kept saying no [it wasn't bothering him], he didn't want to use it as an excuse."
