Dodgers release righty hurler Towers
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com
Towers was 2-5 with an 8.05 ERA at Albuquerque and had an opt-out in his contract if he wasn't called up to the Major Leagues. He is the second veteran to opt out and leave the organization this week. The other was reliever Luis Ayala, who signed with Arizona, which is looking to bolster its sagging bullpen.
The 33-year-old Towers, a former 13-game winner in the Major Leagues with Toronto, nearly made the Dodgers' Opening Day roster but lost out to Russ Ortiz, who was released after less than two weeks with the club.
