Monasterios surprised by move to DL
BOSTON -- Rule 5 rookie Carlos Monasterios said he was surprised to be placed on the Dodgers' disabled list Saturday with a finger blister."It doesn't really affect me," he said. "It doesn't bother me to throw." Speaking through interpreter Kenji Nimura, Monasterios said he has had blood blisters on his index finger in the Minor Leagues, but said he didn't know anything about a broken nail club officials also spoke of Saturday, when he was placed on the 15-day DL. "I just have to respect the decision of the manager," he said. "Once I come off the DL, I hope to pitch as normal as I was. They want me to take care of it and make sure everything is healed." Manager Joe Torre was not surprised at Monasterios' comments. "He probably could pitch with it," Torre said. "We told him this gives him a chance to get this thing well, and when he comes off the list it won't be an issue. I've given him the excuse it contributed to him not doing well. He thinks he can pitch with it. That's fine. Is it there or not there? It's not like we made up something. It's there." Monasterios allowed one home run when carefully used in 11 relief appearances covering 19 1/3 innings the first two months of this season. But in six starts covering 26 2/3 innings, he's been taken deep seven times, five of them in his last three starts. The eight homers allowed lead the staff. "I've been behind in counts lately and then I end up pitching close to the plate, and that's what happens," he said of the home runs. "It's something I have to work on."
Furcal remains away in wake of father's death
BOSTON -- Shortstop Rafael Furcal probably won't rejoin the Dodgers until the middle of the week after the death of his father Sunday, manager Joe Torre said."We hope to see him by the middle of the week, but don't know for sure," said Torre. Furcal was placed on the bereavement list by the Dodgers on Thursday so he could fly to the Dominican Republic and attend to an ailing family member. According to an ESPN report, Furcal's father, Silvino, died from injuries suffered when kicked in the chest by a horse three weeks earlier. According to the report, funeral services will be held on Sunday and Monday in the Dominican near the Haitian border. Chin-lung Hu was called up to take Furcal's place on the roster, and Jamey Carroll has been starting at shortstop since Furcal left.
Dodgers sign three more draftees
BOSTON -- The Dodgers on Sunday announced the signings of three more picks from the First-Year Player Draft. They are: third-rounder Leon Landry, a center fielder from LSU; fourth-rounder James Baldwin III, a center fielder from Pinecrest High School in South Carolina; and 27th-rounder Yimy Queip-Rodriguez, a right-handed pitcher from Peru State College. Baldwin is the son of former Dodgers pitcher James Baldwin Jr. First-round pick Zach Lee remains unsigned and committed to play baseball and football at LSU, although Dodgers officials remain optimistic they can make an offer substantial enough to lure him away. If they are unable to sign Lee, they would receive the 29th-overall pick in next year's Draft as compensation.
