Bucs tab Tomczyk as new trainer

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates have hired Todd Tomczyk to be the team's next head athletic trainer. Tomczyk will take the position most recently held by Brad Henderson, who was let go by the team at the end of the season. Henderson had been the club's head trainer since December 2002.

Tomczyk, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant trainer with the Dodgers, already has ties to Pittsburgh. He is a Bethel Park, Pa. native and earned his sports medicine degree from Duquesne University.

Before joining the Dodgers, Tomczyk, 35, spent eight years as a trainer in the Indians' organization. He worked at four different Minor League levels and spent another two seasons as the organization's Minor League rehabilitation coordinator.

The Pirates will continue to search for an assistant athletic trainer. Mike Sandoval, who held that title since November 2000, was also recently dismissed.
