Guerra returns from bereavement list

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers reinstated reliever Javy Guerra from the bereavement list Wednesday and optioned Stephen Fife back to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Guerra was put on the bereavement list on Saturday to be with his father, who was hospitalized in Mexico after suffering a heart attack Friday morning.

The righty reliever was back in the Dodgers' clubhouse Wednesday morning and was upbeat about his father, who had three blocked arteries. Guerra's father had surgery on Tuesday and had two stents inserted.

Guerra's return will be greatly welcomed with the Dodgers' bullpen overworked and struggling lately. Ronald Belisario has allowed runs in three of his last five outings while Kenley Jansen has blown saves in his last two appearances. On Saturday, Jansen gave up two runs without making a pitch and on Tuesday he gave up an RBI single to Hunter Pence after Belisario loaded the bases.

The move sends Fife back to the Minors after making his Major League debut on Tuesday. He pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking three and striking out one.

"I thought he was good," manager Don Mattingly said. "We couldn't have really asked for much more."

Ethier gets rest in finale against left-hander Lee

LOS ANGELES -- Like Matt Kemp did earlier in the week, Andre Ethier got a day of rest Wednesday in the Dodgers' series finale against the Phillies.

Ethier returned to the Dodgers' lineup Friday after missing 11 games with a strained left oblique. He has gone 7-for-18 with a home run and five RBIs since the All-Star break.

The right fielder is 0-for-11 with five strikeouts in his career against Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee and manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday would be the perfect day to give Ethier some rest.

"This gives him almost three days," Mattingly said. "Today, then tomorrow and then we have a night game, so it's a perfect opportunity for him."

Mattingly said Ethier feels good and the team was encouraged by a hard check swing in the eighth inning Tuesday night.

Worth noting

• After throwing a bullpen session earlier this week, left-hander Ted Lilly will throw another one on Friday. Manager Don Mattingly said progress on Lilly, who is on the 60-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, has been "a nice surprise."

• Mattingly said injured reliever Matt Guerrier is coming along and feeling better. Guerrier, who has been sidelined with right elbow inflammation, is now able to throw back-to-back days and nearly every day.
