Righty Fife undergoes Tommy John surgery

ATLANTA -- Stephen Fife underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. The right-hander last pitched for Triple-A Albuquerque on July 18. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery in Los Angeles.

"I'm not sure exactly when it all happened," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Fife's UCL injury. "I know he's been having arm problems all year."

Fife made a spot start for Los Angeles on May 4, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in six innings against the Marlins.

Mattingly makes sure not to wear out Gordon

ATLANTA -- Dee Gordon returned to the Dodgers' lineup on Wednesday after his second day out of the starting lineup in the previous six games. Manager Don Mattingly wants to be cautious with Gordon, who leads the Majors with 51 stolen bases. Mattingly sees the toll Gordon's style of play has taken on the second baseman.

"I'm trying to keep him at 170 pounds, basically," Mattingly said. "I don't want him getting worn down and trying to have to get back up the hill. I'd rather have him kind of stay there and stay strong."

Mattingly also voiced the desire to give Gordon mental breaks. Given his status as a basestealing threat, Gordon commands a lot of attention and has to remain on edge more than most other Major Leaguers on the basepaths.

"A guy like Adrian [Gonzalez] gets on first and they're not throwing over there. Dee gets on first and he's got to, they throw over four times," Mattingly said. "With his focus, he never gets to turn it off and relax on the bases at all. I think, mentally, with him as much as anything, and he takes a beating just diving headfirst and everything else."

Worth noting

• Minor League reliever Colt Hynes, who was designated for assignment on Monday to make room for newly acquired hurler Kevin Correia, was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Hynes, whom the Dodgers acquired from the Indians in exchanged for Duke von Schamann on April 6, compiled a 4.08 ERA in 42 appearances for Albuquerque. Hynes sports a 9.00 ERA in 22 Major League appearances, all made as a member of the Padres in 2013.

• The Dodgers have asked for unconditional release waivers on Chone Figgins after designating him for assignment last Wednesday. Figgins has not suited up for Los Angeles since June 13 due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.

The emergence of rookie shortstop Miguel Rojas as well as the presence of utility fielder Justin Turner leaves no room for Figgins on the bench after the 12-year veteran made the Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee in the spring.

Figgins, 36, batted .217 (13-for-60) with a .373 on-base percentage in 76 plate appearances for the Dodgers this season.
