By now, Derek Jeter is used to the celebrations, the pregame festivities that opposing teams honor him with in his final stops at their ballparks. Typically, he knows what to expect. But that wasn't fully the case Wednesday night when the Rangers honored the shortstop by surprising him with a special on-field presentation from the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush.
7/30/2014 | Trade target Rios exits after getting hit in left quad
With his name being prominently mentioned in trade rumors, Alex Rios was pulled out of Wednesday night's game vs. the Yankees in the fifth inning because of a bruised left quad. Rios was hit by a pitch from New York starter Hiroki Kuroda in the third inning. He played one inning and then was taken out as a precautionary measure.

Rangers outfielder Jake Smolinski said he is dealing with a small cracked bone in his left foot. He was hit on the foot by a foul ball last week in New York and is currently on the disabled list.

Jerome Williams will get the start in the series opener when the Rangers visit the Indians at Progressive Field on Friday. It's not clear who the Indians will go with on the mound. Justin Masterson was originally set to make his first start since July 7, but the righty was dealt to the Cardinals on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Rangers first baseman J.P. Arencibia had a night to remember Tuesday. But afterward, he said it was not enough. He finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles and two home runs. The second home run was a grand slam, and he drove in a career-high seven RBIs in the 12-11 Rangers loss to the Yankees.

Rangers starter Nick Tepesch is still not completely over the problem in his left knee, and thre Rangers have pushed him back in the rotation. He was supposed to start on Friday against the Indians, but the Rangers are going to start Jerome Williams instead, followed by Miles Mikolas on Saturday and Yu Darvish on Sunday.

The Rangers continue to field trade calls on relief pitcher Neal Cotts, but there were no indications that something would get done before the 3 p.m. CT Thursday non-waiver Trade Deadline. Another option could be preferable to the Rangers. They are considering the possibility of re-signing Cotts, who could be a free agent after the season.
