Fantasy Baseball is an integrated math program for students in grades 4-8. Students learn mathematics skills through baseball statistics in a way that is fun and engaging, and use statistics from current Pirates Players, as well as player cards they create, to compete against one another in simulated baseball games. The program promotes higher order science, technology, engineering and math skills (STEM).
Pirates Charities expanded the program in 2012, in partnership with the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. A total of 13 Boys and Girls Clubs sites and five classrooms within the Diocese of Pittsburgh used the curriculum, with 418 students participating. The year culminated in a playoff tournament and World Series at PNC Park in June, 2012.
