WINS FOR WARRIORS PROGRAMS

The Need:

According to a study by RAND, approximately one-third of those who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan will experience Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Depression. This is attributed to more-frequent deployments, of greater lengths, with shorter rest periods in between. Their research shows that an individual with any of those conditions is more likely to have other psychiatric problems and to attempt suicide.

The Department of Veterans Affairs released figures showing that every day, 22 veterans take their own lives. That's a suicide every 65 minutes.

While it is important to understand what the numbers show, it is also necessary to focus on the strengths of all veterans. There has been a shift nationwide to focus away from negative messaging centered around wounds and scars, instead highlighting skills and resiliency.

Wins for Warriors partners with organizations to provide mental health support for veterans and their families, while also using its platform to be part of the national movement to change the conversation and shift focus to the fact that all veterans can be game changers!

Results:

In August 2013, Detroit Tigers All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander announced a commitment of $1 million to launch Wins for Warriors. Wins for Warriors united with other philanthropic leaders in April 2014 when the organization participated in the launch of the White House's Joining Forces Initiative Impact Pledge.

During the 2015 grant cycle, Wins for Warriors awarded $327,800 in funding to the following six best in class organizations:

  • Partnering with Wins for Warriors, Give an Hour continues to staff two positions on the ground in Detroit and the Richmond/Norfolk markets. Moving into the second-year of this initiative, they continue to do a deeper dive to support the resiliency and well-being of post 9/11 service members, veterans and their families.

  • The investment in The Mission Continues will help empower teams of veterans to tackle tough challenges in Detroit and Norfolk, and support a Richmond veteran's six-month service and leadership Fellowship.

  • Wins for Warriors will be piloting a weekend retreat for military families with young children based on an evidence-based program developed and executed by M-SPAN at the University of Michigan. The Wins for Warriors Strong Military Families Weekend Retreat will be held at a child-friendly Northern Michigan resort. Eligible families will be from the greater Detroit area, have at least one parent who has previously deployed and have at least one child in the home under the age of eight.

  • Collaborating with the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation, Wins for Warriors has engaged RAND Corporation in a year-long study analyzing gaps and barriers that exist in mental health services for veterans in the Detroit metro area.

  • Support for the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) MISSION: Healthy Families (MHF) retreats will provide families from the Richmond and/or Tidewater area an opportunity to step away from daily stressors to build relationships, improve communication skills and develop resiliency skills that facilitate improvement in coping with the stress of military life and deployment.
